Why I Met With My Senator In-state And Why You Should Too!

By Barbara Craigie, FASTSIGNS® Franchisee of Lewiston, ID and FAN

As a franchise small business owner, I’ve been very concerned about a number of rules and regulations coming out of the federal government. So last week, I was glad I had the chance to speak my mind while attending a town hall meeting hosted by Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID).

First I took the opportunity to thank the Senator for his support of the Protecting Local Business Opportunity Act (S. 2015), which restores the traditional definition of a ‘joint employer’. This legislation is key because it would roll back National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) overreach into my business.

During my time at the meeting and with the Senator, I shared my concerns with recent federal Department of Labor regulations, including the increase of the salary cap for overtime to nearly double its current level. This increase in overtime requirements for employers will hurt small business owners like me because of the sharp, sudden increase and it reduces the flexibility workers and managers have on the job. In June 2015, the DOL announced its proposed regulations, which call for sweeping changes that would more than double the minimum annual salary employers must pay certain employees (from $23,660 to $50,400) to exempt them from overtime pay. Also, the increased amount of time and money it will take to comply with the change may force businesses like mine to cut back hours for employees or even worse, to make the tough decisions on which employees I can afford to keep.

Another issue discussed with Senator was the ‘persuader rule’, which, by forcing disclosures of any and all advice given on labor relations matters, will make it tougher for small business owners to seek advice and may also damage attorney-client privilege.

My effort to speak out on small businesses’ issues reinforces the message to lawmakers that local franchise small business owners are concerned with harmful policies. Lawmakers are attuned to their voters so information like this is very impactful, especially from the residents and business owners within their states and districts.

I would encourage other FANs to make their voice known to your elected officials, either through a roundtable or in-district meeting, attending town hall meetings, writing letters, or simply making a call to your member’s office.

I had a great time making my message heard, and I hope every FAN realizes that each voice that we can add to our cause can make a major impact.

Please contact Erica Farage at efarage@franchise.org if you would like more information on getting involved like I did!
